The Strelitzia (Strelitziaceae) is a strange family of monocotyledonous perennial herbs closely related to the Banana family.
Individually the blooms are bisexual with six perianth segments, five or six stamens and an inferior ovary.
Ravenala madagascariensis, the Traveler's Palm from Madagascar, is one of the strangest, and may be found widely in the tropics.
This design is of Strelitzia reginae, like all members of its genus, from South Africa where it is known as Crane Flower. In the United Kingdom and United States it is known as the Bird of Paradise Flower.
In Australia it is better known by its true name ... Strelitzia. Please do not confuse it with the Heliconia.
