About the Poinciana

An outstandingly beautiful tree is the Madagascar Flamboyant, Delonix (Poinciana) regia, a deciduous tree growing to 12-15m (40-50 ft) with large feathery leaves on spreading branches. The flowers appear before the foliage (or in some areas at the same time) as brilliant scarlet racemes at the end of the branches. Each bloom has four scarlet petals and a fifth variegated in red and yellow or red and white. It grows widely in the tropics where it can be seen in all its glory at Christmas.

This particular design I adapted from a water-colour I once did for the cover of a music cassette when living in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
