One of the world's endangered species, the Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) is one of the swiftest of all birds. It swoops on its terrified prey at speeds reaching 300 kilometres per hour. It is strongly built and very streamlined. Its narrow, pointed, swept-back wings are important for swift flight.
This bird does not build a nest ... eggs are laid in hollows in cliffs and trees or in the nests of other birds.
They inhabit all parts of Australia but are not common anywhere. Pesticides cause the shells of their eggs to break before the young falcons can hatch.
The Falcon eats mainly small to medium birds, and any small mammals that they can catch in the open during daylight.
The male is about 38 cm (15") long; the female about 48 cm (19") long.
