The Palm Cockatoo (Probisciger aterrimus) is on the endangered species list. It is a wholly tropical bird and one of the largest of the Australian Cockatoos. It is also known as the Cape York Cockatoo as it is found only on the Cape York Peninsula of Queensland.
This bird, with its huge crest, clings to scrub and jungle, feeding on nuts, grubs and seeds. It can be detected by its shrill whistle. It nests in hollow trees high above the ground.
