About the King Penguin

King Penguins look very much like Emperor Penguins, to which they are closely related. They have the same stately walk as Emperors, with their long knife-like beaks held up. They are the smaller of the two.

King Penguins live farther north than Emperor Penguins, in the ice-free sub-Antarctic seas between the Falkland Islands and Heard Island. There are very small colonies on Staten Island, near Cape Horn, and on the Falkland Islands.

Like other Penguins, King Penguins live at sea when they are not breeding and sometimes swim long distances, turning up on the fringes of the Antarctic pack ice. They can dive to considerable depths to hunt squid and fish which they catch in their sharp bills.
